Regarding the Icons
by Laurie Bauml

Cheryl, Eugene, and Andrew Pituch plus Maria (a foreign exchange student from Finland) drove from the east coast with huge tubes of canvases on top of their van. They arrived at St. Luke's to install Cheryl's beautiful work.

Cheryl was chosen from several possible iconographers by the icon committee. She began painting the icons in her studio in Pennsylvania. Her studio consists of a big old warehouse. The kids hanging around the area finally asked her what she was doing in there after watching her go in and out everyday. She brought them in and showed them. They were amazed and hung around more and more to watch her paint. The local TV station in Pennsylvania did a beautiful 2 minute show on Cheryl painting our icons. We have the videotape if anyone is interested.

The icons arrived on Monday October 25, l999. The measuring, cutting, and glueing began. Cheryl, Eugene, Andrew and Maria worked very hard. A big thank you goes to Bill Gay who took off work to be there and helped tremendously. The Sun Times newspapaer reporter took pictures of Cheryl, one of which was published in the paper the next day. The results are obvious. The icons are beautiful. However, the job is only half done. Plans for completion are scheduled in six months. I feel we are blessed to be part of this renovation.
