Serve the Lord with Gladness ( St. Vladimir Seminary Cost $8.00) a
book review
Dn Danial Doss
Have you ever felt bored during the Divine Liturgy? Did you ask
wonder why the priest and the congregation keep repeating the same words? Let me assure
you that you are not alone, and that everyone of us has experienced that same feeling.
While we are entitled to such a feeling, the problem is not usually
caused by the repetitive words or rubrics used during the Divine Liturgy. Rather it is
caused by our lack of understanding of the meaning of the words and the actions
performed. The book I recommend is small and easy to read, but it will help overcome
this hump. It consists of a simple, yet beautiful explanation of the Divine Liturgy.
It leads the reader step by step through the unfolding Eucharistic mystery, providing a
profound spiritual vision of this most significant aspect of the Church's service to the
Lord. The book fills a very real need for a popular and highly accessible, yet deeply
spiritual presentation of the most important features of the Divine Liturgy.
The author explains the meaning of the main words and features of the
Liturgy by dividing them into 22 separate chapters or "notes" of one to three pages long
each. He starts with an explanation of the words "In Peace". He says that from the start
of the Liturgy: "we are called to assume a state of inner peace." Then he explains what
this means and how it can be achieved. He then moves to the second request: "For the
peace from above". Therefore the peace we request is something other than a state of
mind or a psychological condition produced by our own effort. In other chapters, the
author explains the meaning of: "Amen," "Peace be unto all," "the doors, the doors,"
"truly we believe," "and all mankind," the "Lord's prayer," "we have seen the true light,"
and so on. If you would like to worship with the angelic hosts in the Divine Liturgy and
pray with your soul and mind without feeling bored or distracted, this book is for you.
I strongly recommend it to every one in the Church to be read and reread again and again.
