SUMMER MUSIC CLASSES FOR CHILDREN & ADULTS AT ST. LUKE CHURCH

Haunting Music

June 7-11 9:00-10:00 Minimum 5 students All Ages

In this class about music inspired by the spooky and bizarre, students will learn about orchestra “program music” by exploring the works of Hector Berlioz and Camille Saint-Saëns. Students will learn about Symphonie Fantastique and Danse Macabre, identify and analyze the musical terms and concepts in each piece, and then write a short story and create a class mural based on their listening experiences.

All Around the Baseball Field

June 7-11 10:00-11:00 Minimum 5 students All Ages

In this class students will explore the sport of baseball as they construct a mock baseball field using an assortment of materials including pattern blocks, tiles and a variety of geometric shapes. Students will then work in small collaborative groups to examine baseball through art, movement and sound. They may choose to enact a skit showing the physical movements used in baseball, to create a picture or a painting about the sport of baseball, or to create an audiotape capturing the sounds of the game. Students will share with the entire class what they learned in their individual group work through oral presentations.

Sondheim’s Into the Woods

June 14-18 9:00-10:00 Minimum 5 students Ages 9 and older

This class introduces students to the work of Stephen Sondheim, one of the most celebrated composers of the American musical theatre, and teaches them about the process of writing an original musical.

First students will create the book for a mini-musical based on The Frog Prince and The Frog Prince Continued. Then students will create music for the mini-musical.

Creating an Original Opera

June 14-18 & June 21-25 10:00-11:00 Minimum 5 students Ages 9 and older

What’s opera? Most people, including children, think opera is about actors in strange costumes singing in foreign languages about stories we don’t understand. But opera is much more—the stories express many of the same desires, angers, and hopes experienced in our own lives. In this lesson, students will use the PBS: Great Performances and other Web sites to learn about opera’s dramatic and musical elements, and discover the similarities and differences between opera stories and students' own lives. All the exploration will culminate in the creation and performance of an original one-act opera, written, scored, and performed by students.

Melodies and Math

June 21-25 9:00-10:00 Minimum 5 students All Ages

In this class students will use the keypad of an online telephone to explore number concepts and improvise melodies using 4/4 and 2/4 time. They will then create instruments to echo and accompany the numeric melody they create. Students will stage a collaborative class performance using each group's composition.
