Lay Chairperson Report - January 2017

Submitted by Steve Hansen

January, 2017

The year officially began with our annual meeting on 2/14/16 which was Fr. Paul’s first. We elected several new council members and reviewed the status of the expansion plan and our pending strategic plan. We had no other new agenda items to discuss.

Here are just a few of the many highlights of our parish in 2016:* We held a special meeting in the spring to approve continuing financial support of the St. Luke Chapel in New Lenox through the end of 2016.
* We continued our relationship with Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church during Pascha and were participants in their Junior Olympics event.
* We have continued to support our missionaries who travelled to Guatemala, New Mexico, Montana, and Romania.
* We have continued to open our doors to several self-help groups and homeless women and children through Beds Plus (formerly PADS).
* We continued our Christmas present donation program through the Department of Children and Family Services.
* Fr. Paul completed a bible study on Ephesians and held a session on Orthodoxy and Evangelicalism for anyone interested in learning more about the faith.
* We held a town hall meeting to provide a summary of the strategic planning questionnaire that was completed last fall.
* The Property Team completed several necessary repairs and improvements to our facilities.

Our attendance continues to be flat as you will notice on the adjoining page. If you look at the numbers closely, you will notice the number of children attending seems to be on the decline. This may be attributed to changing demographics of the parish. If that is the case, we need to pay attention to the responses from our strategic planning survey which indicated a need to focus on our youth. Bringing new, young families into the church is the key to our sustained future at St. Luke.

We have some important decisions to make regarding our future. We have reached the end of our journey regarding expansion of our current space. Therefore, we will have to consider the following questions: What does our Lord want our church to look like in the next five years and beyond? For what purposes should the tower funds be used to continue the work of our Lord? What can each of us contribute to ensure the sustainment and growth of our church?
