Safety Ministry Report Annual Meeting January 2006
Prepared by Jim Lewandowski
TIM 1 (6:20) I thank Him who has given me strength for this, Christ
Jesus Our Lord, because He judged me faithful by appointing me to His service.. TIM (2)
(l:12)...I am sure He is able to guard until that day what has been Entrusted to me.
As the year started construction again seemed to be a way of life for
St. Luke. The Old basement had to be waterproofed, sump pumps installed, placing a tool
room seemed to produce a reason to do Spring cleaning early. Also bids for a new sidewalk
had to be put on hold till the spring. We are now back on a regular security rotation for
church closings. Security for Holy Pascha Season was conducted by volunteers who
maintained parking lot, traffic direction, and safety for the Procession's. There were no
summer speakers this year; no one seemed to be interested in hearing speakers during the
summer months. There were no youth programs this year. So security was not needed. New
keys were issued this year to those who need them, also the code was changed. Surprisingly
enough this went over with out many problems. Maintaining security of the collection money
was solved last year by getting the money to the Recording Secretary who counts and stamps
checks before leaving the church. This is done in Father's office while the door is
locked. This method seems to work well. Moving the cleaning supplies to the mop room
solved any potential problems for any of the young children to get hurt. Five elevator
keys were made and given to those who use the elevator on a regular basis, this is
working out well. An audit for this years keys shows, 0 missing keys. The keyless
system is still on this year's wish list.
Practice Fire Drills were conducted, and an actual Fire Drill was
preformed by the Palos Hills Fire Department this year and the Parish passed with flying
colors evacuating the Church in less than two minutes. This was a blessing in disguise
because of the fire drill we found out that the alarm system did not notify the Fire
Department. Thanks to Steve Hansen we got this problem solved. On December 18 2005 the
Fire Dept. ran a test on the system and all is now working. During the snow season the
Sheriff will again monitor sleders as best as they can. The Sheriff's Dept. is very
short handed. Bring up at the next Council meeting the possibility of a temporary snow
fence. In reference to the Criminal background checks on all members who deal with our
children, this was not done as of yet. Three years ago this writer brought up this issue.
It is to our advantage to do this as soon as possible. This also affects our insurance
rates. Fire extinguishers will be checked on a yearly basis. During the Sermon on
Sundays, parking lot security is always checked by me. The undersigned writer was called
out 3 times this year by the Alarm Company. Ref: Breech of Alarm System. All were
mistakes made by Parishioners forgetting the format when leaving the building.
PROPOSALS FOR 2006 #1 Keyless Entry System
Proposed budget for Safety/Security $2,500.00.
In Christ, Jim L.
Jim has done a wonderful job with all the responsibilities we have
pressed upon him. He also has the unenviable task of dealing with the Sunday Sledding
problem. So far there have been no serious problems outside of one unhappy dad. Also
recently we had what appeared to be a deserted car in the parking lot on Sunday. It
turned out to be a 22 year old who had been thrown out of his house the night before.
We thank Jim for all of his efforts to keep us save while we worship.
