I volunteered to reactivate a church ministry known as the Restaurant Rover’s. I did this to become more involved in an area I have some passion for, food. For me, food is very synonymous with a nation, a culture, a family, and to a degree, a religion. I find the history involved in passing down a family recipe or the association of a food dish with a nation, fascinating. The idea that a recipe or a food source that sustained a society continues to have relevancy several hundred, even two thousand years later, while other aspects of that society fades away, is somewhat amazing to me.
My vision for the above ministry is to use dining out and consumption of a meal, as a food “pilgrimage”. My intent is to “dine out” using the spread of Christianity as our “palate GPS”. We will, in fact, be eating foods that are symbolic of the nations that Christianity was spread too. Based on this concept, the first dining experience of this group will be Jerusalem as it marks the death and resurrection of Christ. The Jerusalem Café in Oak Park, will be the origin of our first dinner. In subsequent months, it will be my goal to provide interested diners with a culinary opportunity of Christian fellowship, dining out on cuisines generally associated with the “nations” that Christianity was brought to, centuries ago.
I look forward to past members and new members of this fellowship and I also welcome additional ideas regarding this ministry as it receives new life. I look forward to the subsequent ministry that can come about by the assembly of fellow church members and guests, while in the communities we will find ourselves “breaking bread” together.
I hungrily await your participation and your fellowship.
