Mission Annual Report January 2015

Michaelyn Sloan

In June seven women and college students, along with Fr. Andrew, spent a week at the Hogar Rafael Ayau in Guatemala. The Hogar is an Orthodox orphanage and along with the monastery is located at San Miguel del Lago. In addition to clearing a large area which will eventually have a hydroponic garden and duck pond, weeding and plumbing repairs, participants attended daily morning and evening services, and interacted with the children and teens of the Hogar with songs, crafts, helping out in the kitchen, hiking and kayaking, and hosting a pizza/ice cream party for the teens, our church also provided a day outing at the zoo in Guatemala City with lunch at Pollo Compero (the Guatemalan version of a McDonald’s play land). Participants: Lynn & Joan Bettsanes, Sarah Hansen, Sue Lisowski, Luke & Michaelyn Sloan, Kevin Szpakowicz, Jenny Harrison – Colorado parish, Helen Heers – Florida parish. Later 2 individuals were invited to come with our team.

In July eight individuals participated in the YOCAMA Montana program where they engaged in construction projects, interfaced with senior citizens through food deliveries to their homes and at the Native American Senior Center, and arts/crafts and sports with children and teens of the Blackfeet tribe. Along with other teens and adults from Orthodox parishes in the U.S. they celebrated the Divine Liturgy and daily prayer and sharing. Participants: Steve & Emma Hansen, Joe, Nicole & Conrad Szpakowicz, Olivia Velasquez, Madison Andonaides, Liz Costa( Velasquez family’s sister/aunt.

Funds for participation came from church fundraisers, individual fundraisers and our church Board.
