Mission Annual Report January 2014

Michaelyn Sloan

In July 2013 three adults (Lynn Betsanes, Cheryl Evangelopoulos, Michaelyn Sloan), three teens (Madeline Betsanes, Joan Betsanes, Andrianna Evangelopoulos) and Father Andrew participated in a 10 day OCMC Mission trip to the village of Ouzinkie on Spruce Island in Alaska. We, along with a family of four and another adult from an OCA church in Michigan did a five day, overnight, Orthodox Christian camp for the village's children with several adults attending as well. Prior to leaving for Ouzinkie we spent two days at St. Herman's Seminary on Kodiak Island, Alaska participating in an orientation. We returned to Kodiak for two days after the camp.

During the same month others went to work on Native Indian reservations: Two of our teen boys (Tristen Isom and Kevin Szpakowicz) went on a YOCAMA trip to Montana where they, along with other Orthodox youth worked on a Blackfeet Native Indian reservation.

One of our teen girls (Sarah Hansen) also participated in a YOCAMA camp in New Mexico, working with other Orthodox teens on a Navajo reservation.

Funds for all three trips came from group and individual fundraising activities along with $10,000 our Church Board awarded the mission program.
