Homeless Annual Report January 2008

Pearl Homiak/Elizabeth Wassilkowsky

In October 2007 St. Luke Church became a Monday-night hosting site for up to 21 homeless women and children from the south suburbs of Chicago. This program, which is facilitated by the Public Action to Deliver Services (PADS) non-profit agency, provides a place to sleep, a hot dinner, and next-day breakfast and bag lunch for each homeless guest. In addition, the first names of our homeless guests are posted on our Prayer List every week. St. Paraskeva of Serbia, who was “homeless” after her death, is the patron saint of the St. Luke Night of Sharing.

Many volunteers are needed to operate this program at St. Luke. Currently, more than 40 of our parishioners, as well as a few non-parishioners, volunteer their time for this very worthwhile and necessary activity. Most guests are very grateful, not only for the housing and food they receive, but also for the enjoyable conversation and positive atmosphere that we provide. Volunteers experience the joy of giving and also develop deeper relationships with fellow parishioners. In spite of a few, mainly procedural “bumps in the road” over time, our St. Luke Night of Sharing is going well.

If you have not yet participated in this great opportunity, phone or talk to Pearl or Liz today. Only 12 St. Luke Nights of Sharing remain for this winter season.
