Homeless Ministry

Homeless Team Leader, Pearl Homiak.

Name:Pearl Homiak
Job: Homeless Ministry Leader
Email:phomiak@stlukeorthodox.com

Every Monday night from October through April, St. Luke provides food and overnight shelter for homeless women and children. This effort is a part of the non-profit Public Action to Deliver Services (PADS) in Chicago’s South Suburbs. Many of our St. Luke parishioners have willingly and enthusiastically volunteered to help make this St. Luke Night of Sharing, as we call it, a success.

As the Site Manager, I schedule volunteers, make decisions when issues arise, and work to provide a friendly, safe atmosphere for our homeless guests. I am present at the Site every Monday evening and return again Tuesday morning. My assistant, Elizabeth Wassilkowsky, backs me up when necessary and also is present during our St. Luke Night of Sharing.

Although being Site Manager requires a lot of commitment, it is very rewarding. I love interacting with our guests, most of whom are very appreciative for what we do for them as they struggle to find permanent housing, jobs, etc. I also enjoy seeing how our volunteers cheerfully interact not only with our guests but with each other. I believe our St. Luke Night of Sharing is part of God’s plan for St. Luke parish, and I feel grateful and humbled to be a part of His work.
