The Virgin Strastnaya (Virgin of the Passion)
The Icon
A Russian marian icon from the 19th century with an artistically,
embossed, gold plated silver Oklad. This russian "miraculous image" appeared in 1641, and
was in the Strastnoy-Nunnery in Moscow. The Virgin carries the Holy-Child who turns His
head to the archangels Gabriel and Michael, who are holding the Passionstools. The
Saints at the sides are on the left: An illuminate; on the right: The holy Christopher
(kynokephalos = dogheaded).
