St. Dionysios the Areopagite, Hieromartyr

An icon of St. Dionysios the Areopagite, Hieromartyr.

The Icon

Feast Day October 3rd.

St Dionysios is shown in the traditional vestments of an Orthodox bishop. He is blessing the faithful with his right hand and in his left he is holding the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is unlikely that her ever wore these garments since he lived in the apostolic era. He is portrayed this way to symbolize his apostolic ministry.

Troparion in tone 4

Having learned goodness,
And maintaining continence in all things,
You were divinely arrayed with a good conscience.
From the chosen vessel you drew ineffable things:
Keeping the faith, you finished a course equal to His.
O Bishop and Martyr Dionysius,
Pray to Christ God that our souls may be saved!

Kontakion in tone 8

When in spirit you passed through the heavenly gates
As disciple of him who attained to the third heaven,
You were enriched with ineffable knowledge
And enlightened those in the darkness of ignorance!
Therefore we cry: Rejoice, O Father Dionysius!
