Apostle James Son of Alphaeus

An icon of Apostle James Son of Alphaeus.

The Icon

Feast Day - October 9th.

This icon shows a bust of an elderly St. James, son of Alphaeus, (not to be confused with the Apostle James, son of Zebedee) in the traditional bishop’s robes and carrying the Gospel (the good news of Christ) and a scroll (a sign of being learned and called upon to teach). He is one of the original apostles called by Christ to teach and tend to the early Christians, The word, "apostle" means one who is officially sent on a mission. Christ gave them the power to perform miracles and to heal.

Troparion in tone 3

O Holy Apostle James,
Pray to the merciful God
That He may grant to our souls
Remission of our transgressions!

Kontakion in tone 4

James, the fisher of Gentiles,
Glorious among the Disciples,
Worthy of greatest honor, companion of the Apostles,
Grants healing to the world!
He saves from distress those who honor Him:
Therefore we cry out with one accord:
Save us all through your intercessions, O Apostle!
