As Many As Have Been Baptized Into Christ
Before a child is baptized in the Orthodox Church they are anointed with oil. This is called the oil of gladness. This action is symbolic of being formed in the womb of the church.
After the anointing, the child is totally immersed. It is his personal death and resurrection in Christ. He is being born again of water and the spirit.
This is the final blessing with Fr. Andrew, the parents Thomas and Almaz, the Godfather George, and the newly baptized child of God, Matthew. This Icon of St. Luke was given in memory Evangeline and Edward Saad for the 25th anniversary of St. Luke Parish. This Icon will be displayed in the Narthex surrounded by twelve icons of the saints of America. The icons shows St. Luke painting ( writing) the first Icon of the Theotokos. It is the wonder working Theotokos Icon of Tikhvin thought to be actually painted by St. Luke. The original of this Icon was brought to Chicago in 1949 by then Archbishop John when he fled from Russia after the World War II. It was returned to the Monastery of Tikhvin in 2004.
Fr. Andrew is sprinkling the icon with holy water with the words: This icon is sanctified by the grace of the All-Holy Spirit, through the sprinkling of this holy water: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen St. Luke Holds Annual Meeeting

A cake was provided to celebrate the occasion. The Great Blessing Of Water
This year, because of the snow and sub zero weather, the outdoor blessing of water at a water source took place at the end of January. This was the first Sunday the parish was able to gather in the snow covered courtyard.
The baptismal font is filled with water from the well and is drained back into the well. When the words: "by water and fire Elijah over came the priests of Baal", the children immerse lighted candles into the water.
Father Andrew plunges the Holy Cross into the water while the Choir sang the hymn of the blessing. "When You O Lord were baptized in the Jordan....."
The service ends with the blessing of the people with the newly blessed Holy Water. The service signifies Christ's sanctification of the cosmos. Children's Sermon For February
The children's sermon was about the meaning of Icons and how they are windows into heaven. He remarked how Microsoft borrowed the concept of icon and windows from the Orthodox faith. The newly painted Icon of St. Luke, a gift in memory from a parishioner, was used as an example. This Icon will be blessed at a special service in February. |
