On Women In Orthodoxy
By Mark Bach
Women have an important role in Orthodoxy, some may say a preeminent role. This role is celebrated openly in every Orthodox Church and is given central focus in each church. That role is embodied in the icon of the Theotokos, accompanied by Jesus, located behind and above the altar. Viewing this icon harkens to the words of Jesus reported in Luke 11:28 - "blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" These words remind us of our lifelong pursuit to reunite with God, a.k.a. theosis. The best example of achieving theosis is the Theotokos. Mary, a woman, got it right. If we try to follow Mary's example, we may come closer to our own theosis.
